Global war crimes court names 2 suspects in Darfur case

At the time, he said, Harun was a minister of state for the interior, with the "critical" job of head of the "Darfur Security Desk" which meant that state and local military, police and intelligence agencies reported to him. The prosecutor said that Harun was in charge of recruiting, arming and funding the janjaweed militia "from a budget that was unlimited and not publicly audited." He is currently minister of humanitarian affairs.

Abd-al-Rahman, the local militia leader also known as Ali Kushayb, personally led attacks on villages and towns, the prosecutor's statement said.

By mid-2003 he was commanding thousands of janjaweed militia members. His forces pilllaged and burnt homes and shops, killed hundreds of people, tied women to trees and repeatedly raped them. He personally participated in a number of summary executions. He was arrested in Sudan in November 2006 and is being held on unrelated charges.
